RAILWAY SERVANTS.
THE BIENNIAL CONFERENCE.
[by telegraph.—-press association.] Wellington, Monday. Delegates elected by the members of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants are meeting this week in Wellington for tho biennial conference of that big organisation.
In taking the chair this morning Mr. W. T. Wilson (Palmerßton North), who had been appointed pro tem. pending an election of president for the ensuing two years, stated that while the outgoing executive council had not accomplished all it aimed at, yet it had succeeded in doing . a great deal to improve wages and working conditions on the railways. While he regretted that Mr. W. A. Veftch, the society's ex-president, was not ablo to be present that morning to open the conference, lie congratulated him on h::s elevation to the position of member of Parliament. No doubt during the conference he would put in an appearance and have'pleasure in addressing the conference on society matters. Ho (Mr. Wilson) had pleasure in welcoming the delegates, and believed that no matter what differences might arise all were concerned only for the wellbeing of the society, and were determined to do their best for the men thev represented. Business relating to the society's monthly journal, the Railway Review, was then dealt with, and it was unanimously resolved that the present editor (Mr. Charles E. Wheeler) be reappointed, and that wider opportunities be given for the discussion of matters relating to the I Labour movement and social, economic ' questions. The conference resumes tomorrow morning. i
