WAGES OF WORKMEN.

GREY LYNN COUNCIL STAFF. EXPRESSION OF LOYALTY. The petition to the Grey Lvnn Borough Council from the workmen employed by the Council, asking for an increase of wages was referred to by the Mayor (Mr. VV. 11. M>. ; ray) at the meeting of the Council la st evening. The Mayor said that with some of the councillors he had met the men, and that the Litter's .-pokes man had stated that there was no truth i" the statement that the petition had been instigated by anybody outside of themselves. The petition, it way staled, had emanated fioin the men themselves. In answer to ;t question f rom himself (the Mayor) the men had disclaimed any connection with the Federation of Labour and had stated that they did not want to have anything to do with that b,dy Me had promised the men that the question of wages would be gone into in March, and that the Council would aho ' consider the question of erecting- Alters so that the men could .-cure more continuous work. In reply to Mr, G. J. Garland, (he Mayor stated that the men had been informed that their conditions would be taken into consideration by the Council in March. The men expressed themselves as quito satisfied to await the decision of the Council. Mr. T. L. Thompson said it had been assert that half the men would come out at the call of the Federation 0 f LaLour. The Mayor raid that all he could sav was that thj assurances of the men, oil | whom no coercion had been brought to bear, was quite to the contrary. It w;is resolved, on the ire.;ion of Mr. | Baildon, that the (question be considered at a special meeting of the Council to be held cart'/ next month. ■
