POLICE COURT NEWS.
ALLEGED THEFT.
A dressed, middle-aged man named Frank Clement Crookeß was charged in the Police Court, before Mr. E. C Cuttcn, S.M., with stealing from the person of Laurence Wilson a gun metal watch, an umbrella, and a sum of money. Evidence was given that Wilson left an hotel with between £4 and £5, and when ho reached Albert-street collapsed partly through drink and partly through sickness. Whilst lie was lying on the ground ho felt someone interfering with his pockets. Three witnesses testified to seeing the accused tako something out of Wilson's pockets. Wilson was taken to the hospital, where it was found that all his money had disappeared, also his watch and umbrella. Accused was arrested, and the watch was found in his possession, also some money. Accused, who was defended by Mr. Harden, reserved his defence, pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial at the Supreme Court. Bail, two sureties of £100 each, was allowed. A CASE FOR PROBATION. Rov Cordon Brott, a young man, who pleaded guilty last ' week to stealing a bicycle value £5 10s, the property of Skeates and White, and who was remanded for the probation officer's report, was brought up for sentence. The report was favourable, the only thing against accused being that he did not appear to stick too closely to his work. He was admitted to 12 months' probation on condition that he returns to his father. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Walter Humby, who last week pleaded not guiltv to attempting to commit suicide at Avondale, and was remanded, again appeared and altered his plea to one of guilty. Senior-Sergeant Mackinnon said accused, who had been drinking excessively, was found drinking lysol. lie said lie thought it was gin. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, on condition that be takes out a prohibition order. DRUNKENNESS. An old offender, John Anderson, was sent to gaol for seven days without the option of a fine, on a charge of being drunk. On a similar charge Win. Carroll was fined 10s. Charles Davies, who in addition to being drunk, also broke his prohibition" order, was fined £2. Three first offenders were fined ss. and one forfeited his bail (£1). MISCELLANEOUS. Patrick McGlone was fined £2 for a broach of the laws of decency. Charged with stealing goods from the Hobson-street Wharf, particulars of which were published in yesterday's Herald, Tod McCully was remanded till to-mor-row.
