ASSAULTING THE POLICE.

BY 'jELEGRAFH.-—PRESS ASSOCIATION'. Timaru, Saturday. A disgraceful melee, which occurred in Timaru on Thursday, resulted to-day in tho prosecution of a seaman named Charles Dunn, of 11.M.S Pioneer, for being drunk and disorderly and obstructing the police. In the fracas Sergeant Dart and Constable Fulton were badly mauled by a number of drunken men-of-war's-men, who had the assistance of some town hoodlums. Dunn was the only man the police could identify. The magistrate said he would impose a light penalty, as the man would be dealt with further on board his ship. Tho men were allowed a certain amount of liberty ashore, but must conform to the civil laws. Dunn was fined £2, with the alternative of three clays' imprisonment, for being drunk and disorderly, and was convicted on the charge of assaulting the police.
