MR. P. A. PHILIPS.

■ Sir, There is one gentleman's name and . services to which I do not think sufficient honour was done in connection with tho most excellent celebrations in opening our ' new Town Hall. Mr. P. A. Philips was t largely responsible for the incorporation of ■ Auckand city, and worked like a hero for its enlargementwater supply, Albert Park, I reserve in Alton Road, control of the Do- . main and improvement trusts, establishment of the Free Library, etc. if ever a man ! deserves recognition for past services, Mr. i P. A. Philips does. Ho left the office of town clerk (after occupying the position of . Mayor for throe terms) a poor, almost, blind, man, at the same salary as lie had drawn 26 years prior re to, and with only some four months' holiday during the time ho held office. He also strongly advocated Ponsonbv, Grafton, and Karanjjahap© bcigg added to the city, which, in view of the more recent advocacy of the Greater Auckland scheme, must, be admitted by all working for Greater | Auckland as a foresight in the right direction. Mr. Philips has 'been an ardent worker for Auckland, not only during his 52 i years' residence amongst us, but in anything pertaining to the welfare of the city he has always been ready to champion our cause, as witness his correspondence in tho controversy recently raised by he town clerk of Sydney on our municipal and Harbour Beard affairs. Mr. Philios is residing at Pott's Point. Sydney, but I regret to say is in feeble health, and a long and' useful life is apparently drawing to a close. Aucklander.
