EAST COAST RAILWAY.

i A PERSEVERING LEAGUE. j __ ■■ . - i • ASSISTED BY M.P.'S. ■ 1 Ai.l he Auckland members, on both sides | of the House, responded loyally to the j appeal of the chairman of the Auckland j Railways league (Mr. G. L. Peacooke), j asking for their support and co-operation j in his efforts to induce the Hon. R. Me- ! Kenzie 11 commence the construction j work on the East Coast railway from the j Waihi end, without any further delay. j The sum of £15,000 was voted last session i for this work, but there was no sign that anything was going to be done to spend it this summer. Amongst others written to by Mr. Peacocke was Mr. A. E„ Glover, M.P. (City Central), who now writes to say he will use his best influence to promote the : objects of the league in this matter, and j mentions that Mr. Poland had brought up j the subject in the House. , < An assurance has now been given that [ " a start will be made in a few days with j this important section, which is eloquent j testimony to the good work being done ■■ by the league. When the new line j reaches Tauranga. it will link up the well- | settled and rich, but hitherto isolated, Bay j of Plenty districts with Auckland, and j the general railway system of the North } Island.

A DISSATISFIED COUNCIL. , - I [BY rtXX.O-RA.Vn.— CORRESPONDENT.) . j Waib(i, Friday. , The question of commencing the Waihi- j Tauranga section of the East Coast railway from the Waihi end was discussed at | last night's meeting of the Waihi Borough Council, when it was pointed out that the | Minister for Railways had intimated, through the press, that the work would i lie put in hand within a month. This was evidently not sufficiently definite for j the Council, and on the motion of the Mayor (Mr. J. Newth), the following resolution was unanimously adopted : —"That this Council again brings under the notice of the Minister for Railways the fact that no start has been made on the extension of the East Coast railway from Waihi, notwithstanding the vote of £15,000 allotted last session for the purpose. It respectfully urges on the Minister the im-< portance of at onco beginning the work." It was also resolved to add to the resolution an expression of thanks to Mr. Peacocko (Auckland Railways League), and Mr. Poland, M.P., for their assistance in the matter.
