On inquiry made afterwards no information was forthcoming as to what transpired. Prior to its oidinary meeting last night the City Council met in committee of tbe whole body, when the Mayor (Mr. C. J. Parr) reported that in response to the Council's invitation, a deputation from the various branches of its employee* had waited on the Works Committee last Tuesday. The men had placed before the committee certain matters in regard to which they desired slight improvements as to conditions. These included increased wages and ..as regards carters and other employees, some relaxation of certain conditions, such as "time on." After discussion, the Council unanimously confirmed the action of the Works Committee in. meeting the men. The committee was also authorised to go into the matters raised by the men during the coming week, to gather further information as to working conditions outside the Council's service, and to report to the next meeting of the Council on, the question of tho betterment of the men's working conditions. The Mayor said he believed the committee was prepared to recognise that seme improvements could justly and reasonably be made.
