ASSAULT ON A WOMAN.
INFORMATION- was received by the Sydney police last Friday that an assault had been committed on a married woman. Mrs. Ellen Drinkwator, residing with her husband at 72, Bligh-street, Newtown, Sydney, was returning from tho theatre on Wednesday night, and was walking along Eliza-beth-street, Newtown, at about 11.15 p.m. When passing a side street she was set upon by a powerfully-built man, who threw a handkerchief over her face and endeavoured to drag her into the side street, from which ho had emerged. Mrs. Drinkwator, however, pluckily resisted his endeavours, and eventually succeeded in freeing herself, but not without a violent struggle, during which she was considerably knocked about and had her dress torn. Finding his attempt unsuccessful, and evidently fearing capture, when her screams began to attract, attention, tho man dealt her a heavy blow with his fist between the eyes, knocking her senseless. He then decamped, and Airs. Drinkwator was attended to by neighbours and assisted to her home.
