COST OF PENNY POSTAGE.

At the end of February penny postage within the- Commonwealth will have been in operation for 10 months, and the Federal postal authorities have, since last May, when the System was inaugurated, kept in close touch with the financial aspect of the question. It was anticipated that' penny postage would at the start mean a loss of £400,000 per year. This was considered to be a conservative estimate, and £450,000 had been set down by some authorities as nearer _to the mark. From figures already in the hands of the postal authorities it would seem that the lower estimate will prove very nearly correct. There are two months to go still, but from figures that are already available tho first vear's loss will be within £20.000 one wav or the other of £400,000. With each succeeding year this deficit will, acording to tho authorities, become less and less, through the increased business that will result from cheap postage.
