MORE ROOM IN CITY SCHOOLS.

ENLARGEMENT PROPOSALS.

The Education Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs. G. J. Garland (chairroan), G. Edgecumbe, H. J. Greenslado, J. X). McKenjiie, and G. W. Murray. The Education Department wrote that it would grant £100 towards the cost of a piece of land on the west side of the Napier-street school. The Chairman said the proposed purchase was to give room for the erection of an addition to the school, and the land was expected to cost £200. A total expenditure of £3950 would be necessary to provide for the necessary extensions to the Napier'street, Nelson-street, Chapelstreet, and Newton East schools. J Chameoni MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. AN EMPIRE BOOKLET. A circular from the Department of Education of Manitoba, Canada, was , forwarded by the .Inspector-General of Schools. Ihe Manitoba Department was preparing a booklet for issue on Empire Day, 1912, and wished to include in it messages from Schools and school children throughout the Empire. Copies of the booklet would be distributed to the New Zealand schools. The Chief Inspector and Mr. Murray were demited to make arrangements for obtaining the proposed messages. r ; The Northcote School Committee wrote in reference to the difficulty in draining, the school. No facility exists at present for making connection with the sewage system, and it was decided to contribute £30 or one-third, towards the cost of the special work necessary to deal with the position. Accounts were passed for payment for the following 'amounts .—Administration account, £129 7s 4d; manual, and techC "2V £224 & ; b ™W*W account, £1418 10s 7d: total, £1772 2s lid. Ihe tender of J. A. Petherick, Warkworth, for the enlargement of the Northcote school at a cost of £453, was accepted.

Mr. J. D. McKenzie cave notice to move at next mooting, "That the time has arrived when aided schools in that section known as grade 0, should be placed in a more satisfactory position by fixing ft minimum salary for such schools of not less than £80 per annum.
