MATRICULATION.

Sir,—As this is being insisted upon as an essential to entering practically all the professions, it would be well if these responsible for the examinations were to review the regulations with a view to making the conditions somewhat more liberal and modernI do not mean the standard should bo in any way lowered—indeed, it might well be l raised—but, as an ordinary business man, 1 fome of the conditions seem to mo absurd, others harsh, (a) Candidates applying are I refused information as to their marks, though I such information is given to others. It ! would bo of great assistance to both successi fin and unsuccessful candidates to know how | thev had don© in any particular subject I j mean something beyond the bare fact that they had passed or failed in it, as such knowledge would enable them to "swat" more heavily in their weak subjects, (b) It would, I think, be not unreasonable if a j candidate failing in one subject only should ha allowed to take that one subject again in I say, three or four months, instead of as now, having to wait a year, and then take all subjects over again. I have a case in mind in which a candidate passed in all subjects but one, in which one he failed by only a _ narrow margin, and although doing so his aggregate marks were more than those of many who had passed. No doubt there are others in similar case 3, and to be held back a whole year for failure in one subject seems a very heavy penalty Surely in eases such as the one" cited the penalty might be mitigated.
