REGARDING APPOINTMENT OF CITY ORGANIST.
Would it not be advisable to defer same for at least a year, as is the custom in most cities, and so give the public an opportunity of hearing many capable organists. Every player, [no matter; how gifted he may be, has his own particular style, temperament, and favourite composer. The instrument, being under the supervision and care of reliable builders, will certainly not deteriorate, but is sure to improve with judicious usage- ; Tho acoustical properties of the hall are at present not all that could be desired, and attention to same is of more immediate necessity than a hasty appointment of an Organist. • May I suggest that much as we appreciate \ transcriptions of Wagnerian orchestral music and revel in the Superabundant " Rides," ■*' Storms," and "Fantasias," we should occasionally like to hear Mendelssohn's six organ sonatas, Handel's concertos, Salome's offertoires, Rheinberger's sonatas, Guilmant'a unique Ftench works, Widor's symphonies, Pierno's serenades, Dubois's choruses, and the grand stately music of the English school of composers. By all means let us mark time, so that' wo can at least hear the best organists in New Zealand play on our instrument before anyone is permanently appointed. We havo nothing to gain and may lose much by an unduly hasty decision. Vox Ht/MANA.
