The weather was cold and boisterous for the New Zealand Championship Athletic ting, while frequent drenching showers fell during the day. It was a day of surprises, and the crowning surprise was .Southland eventually annexing tlu> shield with 34 points, while the others in order were:—Canterbury, 26; Auckland, 20; Wellington, 18; Otago, 14. Christie (Southland) 3 ' At the 50yds mark Opie and Eggleston were abreast, but the latter forged ahead »nd won by three or four inches. Christie ; ; was 2ft behind Opie, third. Against a head wind Keddell could make little progress. He was certainly faster than Cook over the jumps, and was almost on a level at the last hurdle, but Cook raced away in the straight, and won by 4yds. Time, 63 1-s*.
