Colonel G. C. B. Wolfe, officer commanding the Auckland military district., and his general staff officer, Major W. It. Rraithwaite, are at present at the 6th (Hauraki) Regiment's camp at Annandale, Fiako. ; The second annual prie'e meeting of the King Country Association will beheld at the Matapui-range, Taumarunui, on Saturday and Monday' next. There are oight matches'. (including- the grand aggregate) in the programme* Among recent appointments : are the following :—lsth (North Auckland) Regiment. J. W. Silcock to bo second lieutenant; unattached list (Senior Cadets), C. Meredith, to be captain; J. G. Paterson to be lieutenant; A. D. Dawson, to bo second lieutenant. The following promotions have made in No. 3 Field Company New Zealand Engineers (Auckland) :—Corporals Chilcotfc and Gibson, to bo sergeants; Lance-Corporals Rea, Robinson, and Harney, to be corporals; Sappers Nairn, Marshall. He is also upholding the honour of New Zealand on the athletic field, for at the recent sports rhompionship meeting, held at Bombay, ■ he alone of his. regiment secured, a pla«s defeating all-comers in his old favourite distance, tlis 120 yds hurdles. The appointment of QuartermasterSergeant J. T. Supernumerary Second Lieutenant H. J. Gillmore has been added to the establishment of'the. same regiment, and Corporals W. P. Gray and F. A. Hellaby "have been appointed second lieutenants supernumerary to the establishment. ' : I have received a very long letter from Mr. W. D. Logue, of "Pukekohe, in de- • fence- of bull's-eye shooting. But- the ■ value of his letter is discounted by the fact chatjho Defence authorities do not propose to abolish the bull's-eye. The first portion of the musketry , course recently adopted consists .: of bull's-eye snooting. It is admitted that the trained ; bull's-eye shot is far. .. more likely to' develop into a good service shot than the main who has never shot at a bull's-eye. But a man, not automatically become a. good service shot by reason of success at' the* binTs-eye. The evolution of war. fare demands that the modern rifleman shall be able to hit moving objects clad in neutral tinted clothing, instead of stationary black- and white targets, and so bull's-eye-; shooting is becoming the ground work «'of the rifleman's training," instead of "the beginning and the end of ft. •_ ; , iV T,-f- '''" V Officers, warrant officers, and non-com-issioned officers of the New Zealand staff corps and permanent staff .have been, detailed for duty in camp with units as under: — ' (Hauraki) Regiment, Annandale, February 17 to 25, 1912 : Captain C. Meiklc, Sergeant Instructors A. C Jameson. 1 Walker, .7. Turner, J. Marr, T. Collins, Sergeant-Major Instructor J. E. Partridge, Sergeant Instructor G. D. ■' : Page, . . • The scheme of training in tlie Auckland military district is being readjusted, and tho system of arranging drills and parades modified. In future, permanent- staff- ' instructors will instruct in only one branch, i.e., either in mounted rifle work, • / " infantry work, artillery, etc. The permanent staff instructors are allotted to definite units; one instructor to every two complete : squadrons in the mounted branch, and to every two complete companies in the infantry, with a proportion of one or indve complete senior cadet companies allotted to instructors, so tliat the drill centres of tho senior cadet companies coincide, as far as possible, with those of * the''territorials. Adjutants of utfits will thus, in future, be responsible to their commanding officer for the supervision of the training of their own unit, * and, in addition, they will supervise the training of all senior cadet companies trained by their own particular regimental instructors. In like manner acting-brigade majors (instructors in 4 mounted or infantry duties) will only supervise the training of their own brigade and those cadet companies trained by the instructors of their own particular brigade.' By this means, complete chains of responsibility are established in the district, i.e., through the brigadier in each branch, with his ting-brigade-major, to officers commanding units and adjutants, and through the latter to officers commanding territorial squadrons and companies and cadet companies. In the course of a lengthy circular from district headquarters, it is pointed out that this scbemo of training will not interfere in any way with the present system of area and group organisation, which, for the purposes of administration, registration, posting, enrolment, etc., will be tarried on as usual by the group officer. On the other hand it* is to be distinctly understood that training is to be carried on. irrespective of areas and groups. It is to be purely a brigade and regimental system. Tho tours of duty to tho various drill cent! by each permanent staff, instructor will be governed by the number of drill centres belonging to each double company, double squadron, and cadet companies allotted to his charge. It is not expected that instructors will visit all drill centres alike. Local conditions will dictate that the attendance of an instructor i 3 required at some drill centres oftsuer than others, and it follows that at drill centres, where territorial officers can attend regularly, ifc will be unnecessary for the perma- , nent staff instructor to attend there so often as in ( outlying drill centres. In fact, his attention, should mainly be devoted to ontlying drill centres which territorial officers might find difficulty in reaching.
