DEEP LEVELS CROSSCUT.

ALTERNATIVE TENDERS INVITED.

A meeting of the Thames Deep Levels Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present: Mr. E. H. Taylor (chairman), C. Hudson, H. Gilfillan, Graves Aickin, A. Bruce, J. Kneebone, and H. Adams. The superintendent's report stated that in another 28ft the deep levels tunnel would enter the Waiotahi Company's property. The present contractor had another 62ft to go to complete his contract. The Board decided to call for alternative tenders for driving a further 500 ft or 1000 ft of the main crosscut. The tenders will close at noon on March 11, and the Board will meet the following day to consider same. NEW SYLVIA. The manager of the New Sylvia mine, Thames, reports as follows for last week: No. 3 level : The drive on the cross reef is now 70ft from the south rise. The reef is well defined, but the values are lower. Battery level : A steady supply of ore is coming to hand from this level. Rising for another stope is being carried on between Nos. 3 and 4 rises, and colours of gold were seen in the quartz broken. The reef is 72in wide. NEW MAGNET. The directors of the New Magnet Gold Mining Company, in their half-yearly report state that all work in the mine was suspended in November last, when the Warden granted the company six months' absolute protection Sinco May last the operations in the mine produced ore, which wat treated at the Waiotahi battery, giving a net return of £98 13s Id. At present a tribute is let over a certain portion of the mine, but as the same will expire with the period of protection, working will have to be resumed in May next, and the call now current was made to provide the necessary funds to meet the expenditure. The retiring director is Mr. W. J. Arnold, who, being eligible, offers himself for re-election, and Mr. W. Kayli, auditor, again seeks reappointment. NOTES. The low level tunnel in the Rising Sun mine, Karangahake, was extended Bft last week, making a total . distance of 1877 ft. The country is of a good description, and fairly good breaking ground. The battel manager of the Bendigo mine, Waiorongomai, reports that it will take till next Monday to effect the necessary repairs to the ' battery. Crushing will then bo commenced. Sloping on the lead in the New Success mine, Coromandel, was continued last week. The lead showed occasional strong colours of gold in the stone. The country rock remains very hard, being all midlock, and renders progress slow. During the past week driving was continued along the Hauraki north reef in the Hauraki Reefs mine, Coromandel, for 20ft. A start was made to rise up through to the No. 2 level of the Old Hauraki North shaft. In the Dominion mine, Karangahake, the country still continues very hard. It is difficult* to bore, but shoots well. A good flow of water is still issuing from the face. The manager of the Waitangi Consolidated mine, Tararu, reporting for last week, states that the main drive was advanced 14ft total 3201 ft. A reef formation, sft in width, was cut 32ft from the main drive, and crosses the drive at right angles. Two samples were assayed, which were of very low grade. The leader in No. 1 winze at No. .3 level was stripped for a depth of sft and a length of Bft and broken down. The ore showed colours and dabs of gold, and also a little telluride.
