A FISH MARKET.
Attempts in the past to establish a fish market in Auckland have not been , encouraging, but that is no reason why a further effort should not be made. For ' years now the fish supply has been in a very unsatisfactory condition. Not only have prices increased, but supplies have f been intermittent and inadequate. It has been apparent for a long time that the whole fishing industry requires to be put on a newfooting so as to ensure the inhabitants of the city a cheap and abundant supply of this wholesome and nutritious food. There is no heed for us to go into the reasons for this state of things. Whatever they may be the fact remains that while our coastal waters teem with a large variety of fish, fish in Auckland is both scarce and dear. Our contention is that it should be so plentiful that it would become a daily article 1 of diet in the great majority of the homes of the people. The establishment of a fish market would not of itself bring about this result, but we believe that it would greatly contribute to it, and pave the way for a marked improvement in- the existing methods. At all events the proposal is one that we hope the City Council will seriously consider with a view to terminating the present haphazard and unsatisfactory arrangements. We would also suggest that the whole question of a regular and sufficient supply of fish for the city should be gone into carefully and exhaustively.
