CANADA AND AUSTRALIA.
"NEGOTIATIONS TO A FINISH." By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright.
Melbourne, February 9. The letter which the Federal Minister for Trade and Customs (Mr. Tudor) has received from the Canadian Minister for Trade and Customs (Mr. Foster) covering proposals for trade reciprocity between Canada and Australia, sets out that Canada has already admitted British colonies, including ' the West Indies and the ; Dominions of New Zealand! and South Africa,, to the advantages of her British preference, amounting to about 30 per cent. Mr. Foster states that it seems too bad that Canada had not previously been able to arrange preference with Australia. Canada was desirous, both on sentimental grounds and from reasons of equal advantage, that the anomaly should ba removed as speedily as possible. Canada was prepared to give substantial preference on all articles of export in return for substantial preference on her goods, with free entrance of some of her natural products. ."•■■• -;.'. '' '". ■}- Mr. Foster asks Mr. Tudor to make proposals and promises to pursue the negotiations to a finish. He adds that once preferential inducements {ire added the steamship communications will be better and the two peoples will become more intimately acquainted with and interested in each other. Should Mr. Tudor prefer that the proposals should come from Canada, he would be glad to frame suggestions provided that he was assured that the Commonwealth was prepared to fallow them to completion. ;
