Shortly after 2 p.m. yesterday the Island schooner Elfriede arrived in the stream from the Friendly -Islands. The. little vessel, which is engaged in the trade between Samoa and the Friendly Islands, has come to Auckland for docking and overhaul. While hero she will also have ian auxiliary engine installed. The Elfriede left '■ Hapaai on January 22, and met with fine weather throughout the passage. NOBBY'S LIGHT. Some time ago it was .announced that the New South Wales Navigation Department had decided to improve Nobby'"* lights There had been complaints that tho light was not as clearly observed at sea as it should he. On January 23 Mr. Ford, assistant-lighthouse engineer, arrived at Newcastle for the purpose of making the necessary improvements. It is anticipated that when the work is completed the light will have twice its present brilliancy. ■ THE BLUE RIBBON. Messrs. H.irUnd and Wolff on December 21 last launched their last vessel for tho year, tho Demerara, built for the Royal Mall Steam Packet Company. It i*.stated that during the, 12 months ►; the firm" havo completed vessels of an aggregate j of 118,309 tons. Messrs. Harland and Wolff are thus likclv for the 14th occasion in their history to head the list of shipbuilders. The horsepower of their vessels, namely. 97,000, seems likely to be the highest on record. As regards tonnage, the record of Messrs. Swan, Hunter,' and Wigham Richardson for 1900, when their output "was 126,921 tons, will still remain unbeaten. ;
