EXCITING RESCUE.
SAILOB fITJMPB OVEBBOARK, Ax exciting and unrehearsed aquatic event took place in . connection with an excursion of the S.B. Karnah tc= Kelson's Bay (New' South Wales) last, week. About 200 excursionists were on buard. Shortly after leaving Nelson's Bay, cm the return journey, a pallor named Oscar Lofgren, jumped overboard. Constable Ash wood, who was OH ; board, . had shortly before - advised the sailor, who was under the influence of drink, to go to his bunk. This advice was followed, bat shortly ' afterwards - he emerged from the forecastle, and,,clad in singlet, ' trousers, and boots, sprang into I the water. Immediately all was excite-' ment. The steamer was stopped, 1 and a boat lowered, with the constable in charge, but the efforts to secure the man were foiled by his splendid ? swimming. Each time the boat approached he evaded his rescuers by diving. Attempts were* made to Isasoo | him, but these failed, the rope being wet. He was able to throw it off before it could be tightened. The excitement of f those on the Karuah at this became intensified as the drogher Grace came upon the scene, ■ as, notwithstanding the shouts of the police officer and boat's crew, ; she almost cut - the man down. He, however, emerged at the stern, still swimming strongly. Resort was finally had to boathooks, and, after half an hour in the water, he was secured and taken on board the Karu&h, and afterwards locked up for using improper language;
