MOTOR CAR FATALITY.
MAN KILLED IN BEACH ROAD. COLLISION WITH TRAMWAY POLE. As the result of a motor car colliding with a tramway post in Beach Road last evening, Mr. John Alexander McConnell, of Victoria Avenue", Rernucra, received injuries to his head which subsequently resulted in his death. It appears that a taxi-car, driven by a man named Batty, and owned by Messrs. Casey and Graham, with Mr. McConnell as passenger, was proceeding along Beach Road before six o'clock last evening. Just before reaching J. J. Craig's stables, the driver of the motor car saw several horses ahead, two of which, it is stated, were unattended. As the motor car approached, one of the horses turned towards the right, and to avoid crashing into it, the driver endeavoured to cross to the other side of the road. While crossing, the rear portion of the motor car struck a tramway pole, and Mr. McConnell either jumped or was thrown out on to the road, whilst tho car ran on to the pathway before the driver could check it. Mr. McConnell was picked up in an unconscious condition, and bleeding profusely from the head, and was conveyed to tho hospital, where he died at 9.15 p.m. One wheel of the motor car was wrecked, and tho mudguard and step and part of the tonneau considerably damaged. Tho lato Mr. McConnell was 36 years of age, and was employed as an accountant by Messrs. R. H. Abbott and Co., of Elliott-street. He leaves a wife and a family of young children. At one time he was a member of the Parnell Borough Council. • ■ ' v An inquest will probably bo held to-day.
