THE CALLIOPE DOCK.
TENDERS FOR NEW PUMPS.
CAISSON TO BE REPAIRED.
The long discussed question as to the pumps at Calliope Dock has now been settled, and new pumps are to be obtained. The Auckland Harbour. Board decided yesterday - that - the tender of 'Messrs. Fullerton, Hodgart and Barclay, Ltd., for the sum of £3485; f0r the; new i pumps and . repairs, should bo accepted. It was also resolved, on the. recommendation of the engineer* (Mr. W. H. Hamer) to ask the Government to waive the duty on the pumps, as they will bo largely used for Admiralty-purposes at a dock which is subsidised.
\ /Considerable, repairs have been, found to be necessary' to put the caisson of the 'big dock in/orders A recommendation ■was « mado ';S that, ; subject to • certain works being'.carried* out, by the Board, the tender of Messrs. G. Fraser and Sons, Ltd.,' for » the repairs, at a; cost of £2998, should be accepted. . '■> ' The engineer stated, in reply to the chairman, that the work covered by the ■tender was only what ' was seen _to be necessary. It was almost-inevitable* that a good deal more would have to Jje done. The repairs to, the caisson of the"Auckland dock had cost about.twice' aa' much as had^been{estimated. * \ ■' •
Mr. J. H: Bradney asked if the extra work would have to bo done by , day labour. i * i The chairman {Mr- J. H. ; Gunsori) replied that it* would all bo done by tho contractors -at 'schedule* 'rates already fixed. .-, , ■, .; ,t :
