In connection with the statement of the Times that, subject to the shareholders' ratification, the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company and the Elder Dempster Company _ will acquire all the Union Castle Line's ordinary shares, it is pointed out that the price of Union Castle shares has doubled during the past month, and the purchase price is now £32 10s for £10 shares. The Royal Mail -line, which does not belong to the Shipping Conference, absorbs the Union Castle. It is understood that the amalgamation will tender for the South African mail service.
