GREY LYNN BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Grey Lynn Borough Council was held last evening, when there wore preeent: Tho Mayor (Mr. W. H. Murray), Messrs. G. Baildon, W. Donald, J. A. Warnock, G. J. Garland, F. Brinsden, and J. W. Tattersfield.

A letter was received from the Secretary of Public Works with regard to the'line of Wellpark Avenue and other streets. The Mayor said that the Council had held the opinion that if they set back the line of tho streets in question it would bo right up to the people's verandahs, and that it would bo letter to leavo it as it is. The matter was referred to Sir. Garland and tho town clerk.

Mr. G. J. Garland, who had attended a conference of quarry owners as the Council's delegate, reported that a resolution had been unanimously arrived at that the owners of quarries and scoria pits would be pleased to meet the representatives of tho workers' unions through the - operation of tho Arbitration Act. This report was adopted. The Finance Committeo in its report recommended with regard to Mr. J. A. Warnock's application for a remission of rates that the request could not he acceded to in consequence of the fact that the necessary notice of the house being unoccupied had not been given. Mr. Warnock explained that in asking for this remission he had asked for no more than he was justly entitled to, for he was rated for services that had never been rendered to him at all. He had been away from the borough for 15 months, and last year the rates upon his premises had in his absence been remitted, and it was simply through a technical mistake in regard to the notice that tho same concession was not made now. The Mayor said that he and the councillors fully recognised that Mr. Warnock had every right to enjoy the privileges that every other ratepayer enjoyod; but a mistake . had . been made in the matter of tho application, which was made too —that was all.

It: was decided that tho next meeting of the Council should be held on Monday, January 15 next, and that a special meeting to consider ways and means in respect of the outside staff should be held as soon after that date as practicable. / : ; In closing the ordinary meeting His Worship wished the councillors and staff the compliments of the .Christmas season.,
