KAURI FOR AUSTRALIA.
DUTY INCREASED "FIVE-FOLD.
A RISE IN THE RETAIL RATES.
By Telegraph.— Association.—Copyright Melbourne, December 2. . In introducing the tariff amendments in the House of Representatives, the Minister for Customs (Mr. Tudor) stated that beyond allowing the free importation of New Zealand white pine of certain sizes, there would be no alteration in timber duties. The tariff does, however, raise the doty on kauri by the deletion of sub-item B, item 303, which read, "New Zealand pine (undressed) 6d a hundred superficial feet," and : the substitution of an item dealing only with white pine for butter boxes. This throws other New Zealand pine, including kauri, under sub-item D, "Timber (undressed) 2s 6d a hundred feet." Merchants have accordingly raised the prices of New Zealand timbers other than white pine as follows:—Half-inch, by Is a hundred superficial feet three-quarter-inch, by 8d; one inch and over, by 2s.
