MOTORIST : BREAKS HIS NECK.
CHAUFFEUR'S LUCKY. ESCAPE.

A wklt.-kxown- settler of Grey town named John Cotter was motoring from Palmerston North to-day, and when about fivo miles to the north of Masterton Ilia car became unmanageable. . The motorist was descending a. hill at the time, 'and his car went over the embankment. Cotter jumped from the car, and. fell on his head, breaking his neck, ono arm, and sustaining scalp wounds. Death was instantaneous. .: The deceased leaves a , widow and one daughter (Mrs. White, of Porangahau). At the inquest the evidence showed that the deceased, in company with a chauffeur named Bailing, Was driving a new car. When, ascending the hill the car got into a water-table. It then sheered across the road, and went over- the embankment, which was about 60ft deep.. -r? The car fell on Cotter, while Barling "escaped with broken fingers and bruises. ! A verdict ! of death from misadventure was returned.
