SLOWER TRAIN SERVICES.
THE ALTERATION CRITICISED.
Disapproval of the alterations in the time-tables of trains on the Auckland service that come into force" to-day, was expressed by several business men to a H,f;r.u,d reporter yesterday. It was contended that the travelling public were put to a great deal of needless inconvenience by the slow speed of trains, as; things previously existed, and that the so-called improvements are in reality evidences of mismanagement.
Mr. (5. L. - Peacocke, - chairman of the Auckland Railways League, said He certainly did not see what advantages' could result from the alterations, except 1 that by taking more time' the trains would 'be better able to keep to time-table. In his opinion, v.hat was really wanted bv the public was a speeding-up'of the trains' sufficient to shorten the long journeys. Without speaking as 7an expert on timetables he would say that by proper agement it would be quite easy to expedite the running of :several of the trains ; both on-the North Auckland and the South Auckland line. "• " Any ; arrangement,".' continued •/ - 'Mr: Peacocke, " which simply makes for an earlier arrival at the destination by. means of starting out' earlier is 1 reallv saving no time to the travelling public wlyite.ver, but adds to the inconvenience. With regard to the Rotorua express it is a general impression that the time occupied in doing the journey t between Auckland and Rotorua could be expedited without stoppage at any intermediate station of any importance. So far as I can see, the slow-run-ning of trains is to a great extent caused by the running of 'heavy trains with the object of ; : overtaking tho ever-increasing traffic without increasing the number of trains. • . . , -
