"THE HOPELESS FACE."
The Empire Magazine for the current month contains an article entitled "The Hopeless Face," written by Mr. P. A. Vailo. Dwelling on the hopeless face of the common crowd, he remarks :—" I have never forgotten it.' I have .small chance to do so. 'The hopeless face' is before in© wherever I g0... It sears itself into my brain so that I long to burn that awful phrase into those who are responsible for 'the hopeless face' of England's people. Who arc these people who ought to be branded? Why simply the parochial politicians who play about under the big clock at St. Stephens, the little local log-rollers, who have achieved their ambition by getting the right to add M.P. to their names, and who are for ever after, at least during their tenure of office, so many 'dumb, driven, dogs' under the lash of the party whip. These are the men who are primarily responsible for England's 'hopeless face.'" Mr. Vaile urges hi 6 readers to go to such lands as New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and South Africa. , , '
