'■>■ ,-„-■_ :llI ' : •,Daroaviub/ Monday, A .roix of the ratepayers of the Dargaville borough- was held to-day on the proposal to borrow £8500 for municipal gasworks, £900 for street improvement, and £600 for a (sanitary service.' The poll resulted as- follows •.—Gasworks,, 110' votes for, 14 votes against; street improvement, 105 for, 19 against;/ sanitary purposes, 90 for, 34 against. In addition to the proposals car* . lied the borough will early - in.-.. the new year receive the first instalment'of the sum • previously carried of £20.000 for street improvement.
The population of the borough in three years lias increased by 500, and during the three years the. borough has been in exist-' ence- buildings costing £25,000 have been erected, amongst which is a theatre capable of accommodating 2000 people. Building contractors aire unable to keep time with tl«»' requirements, and. the plans of many buildings' are lying In the hands of contractors. 'Hie municipal gasworks will be proceeded with at once. '■■ ■{ . ,' v The butter output for. the district now approximates three and a-half tons daily, and there is a constant extension of settlement in outlying agricultural area*. The Kaipara Steamship Company is instituting a'!daily service.,, from, Helensville' and" a through steamer connection with Tangiteroria, to cope with the fast increasing tourist traffic via Whangarei. . The post office erected nine years ago is totally inadequate to handle the postal and telegraph business,' and negotiations are in progress for- the erection of a more commodious building. The wharfage accommodation is now the finest in the province outside of Auckland, and on every- hand there is distinct evidence of a wave of prosperity.
