The Stone (Staffs.) Board of Guardians advertised for a married master and matron of their workhouse, adding "without children preferred." Among the replies they got wa« one from London. The writer, signing herself " Happy Matron and Mother," wrote: "Isit a crime to have children? Who are more fitted to look after these men, women, and poor little orphans than masters and matrons who have children of their own? Ask yourselves the question. Have any of you children, and are they not a comfort to you 9 Surely you can't have thought or looked at it in that light, or you would never be so cruel. .. Masters and matrons are only human, after all, and surely they have as much right to have children as barbarians Mr. Justice Grantham appealed to ministers and clergymen to try and stop illegal practices amongst women. Why iot appeal to those who encourage them?.
