The Remuera Club's courts will bo formally opened for the season this afternoon. Tennis players were threatened with an-' other wet aftcrnon last Saturday, but luckily with the aid of a pood wind the courts dried up well and were, in good playing order. The Devonport Club had a successful opening last week. There was a large attendance of members and visitors, and many interesting games took place. The courts, which wero very bare towards tho end of last season, are now in fine order, and give promise of standing much wear. The men's team will be strengthened by the return of Robson, Shirriffs, and Ewen. With tho strong ladies' team available tho club will take a lot of beating for the junior grade pennant. West End will have the assistance of S. Upton, tlio ex-Auckland singles champion, for this season's inter-dub championship. Upton was present on the Ponsonby courts on Saturday last, and gave promise of getting back into his old form. Duncan, an. ex-Wellington • player, has joined West End. With Unton, Dr. Keith, Quinncll, Duncan, Goldie, and Smith, tho Ponsonby Club will have a formidable men's team this season.
Tho Otahuhu Club is now as strong numerically as any of tho city clubs. Two teams have been entered for the third-grade intor-club competition. Several promising players aro in tho ranks of the suburban club, and this season's competitions should do much towards bringing them out. Tho following entries have been received for the intor-club competitions: — First Grade: West End, Eden and Epsom, and Particll. Second Grade: est End, Lden and Epsom, Parnell. Auckland, Remuera, Devonport, and Onehunga. Third Grade: Dominion Road, Auckland, Mount Albert, Devonport, Eden and Epsom, Onehunga, Remuera, Otahuhu (two teams). There is a total of 19 teams in tho above threo grades, as against II teams which competed in tho three grades last season— a very satisfactory increase. Permission has been received to hold the association's handicap tourney during tho New Year holidays. Mr. Brown, association secretary, has received a communication from the New Zealand Association, asking him to submit the names of five gentlemen suitable to act on the Anneal Committee. The chief functions of the committee arc to settle disputes on tho laws of the game and to furnish rulings on points of law relating to the game. The present New Zealand singles champion, J. C. Peacock, was invited to fro to Australia for six weeks prior to the Davis cup challenge, with a view to joining '! the Australasian team, but owing to business arrangements ho was unable to accept the. selectors' offer.
