WAIHI. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT., Waihi, Friday. The members of the Waihi Liedertafel gave a "welcome home" supper to Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Williams and Miss Williams in. , the , Foresters' Hall last evening. Mr. Williams returned thanks, and presented the society's con-: ductor, Mr. T. E. Midgley, with a substantial cheque in recognition of his services during . the past season. Several musical items were given;" An oratorical competition took place in St. Joseph's Convent schoolroom last evening in connection with the Young Men's Catholic, Club. The Very 'Rev. Dean Hackett (Paeroa) and Mr. W. M. Wallnutt acted as judges. The first prize was' won by Mr. P. Lynch, the second "by Mr. T. Collins, and the third by Mr. L. Woods. Dean • Hackett complimented the Very Rev. Father Brodie upon having such excellent talent in the club. I _ IIUNTLY. [from OUR OWN correspondent.] Huntly, Friday. * > A meeting of the committee elected in connection with the driving of the first pile of the new bridge was held in the Town Board's office on Thursday night, Mr. J. P. Bailey, chairman of the Town Board, presiding. Tho secretary read a. letter from the Hon. R. McKenzie, who on his own behalf and that of Mrs. McKenzie, acknowledged with many thanks the receipt of the handsome memento forwarded to him to mark the occasion of a historic event, and expressing the hope that he would be able soon to visit Huntly to thank the people .in person for the gifts which he and his wife so greatly treasured. Tho balance-sheet, which showed that the receipts (£lls 17k 6d) just mot the expenditure, was passed, the secretary (Mr. F. Harris) being highly complimented on the manner in; which he had performed his duties. The ! receipts included £81 18s as voluntary subscriptions, and £33- 19s 6d from the sale of banquet tickets. The principal items in the expenditure were : Catering, £75; hire of marquees, £8 18s; refresh- ; ments at banquet. £11 10s; mementos, of occasion, £15; decorations, £2 lis 7d; freights and carting, £1 ss. As an : acknowledgment of his services Mr. J. P. Bailey, who acted for the Minister in striking the first blow at the pile and turning the first sod of the projected railway, was presented by a committee with a handsome double gold albert with, a pendant suitably' inscribed. Mr. L. B. Harris, jun., eulogised Mr. Bailev's services to the community for a period extending over a quarter of a century. Mr. Bailey, who was taken completely by surprise, feelingly replied. There being two candidates for the presidency of the Waikato Miners' Union a ballot was taken this week, and resulted in the election of Mr. T. Marshall by a majority of 19 votes. Mr. Marshall polled 184 votes, as against 165 for Mr. Jas. Fulton, while 19 were informal. Mr. W. T. Mills addressed a crowded meeting in tho Masonic Hall on Thursday night on the liquor question. Dr. R. C. Macdiarmid, m introducing the speaker, pronounced against'alcohol from a medical point of view. The meeting was very orderly, and no questions were asked. At the close of the meeting the, following resolution was carried without, any expression of dissent —" That this' meeting thanks Mr. Mills for his address, and pledges itself to vote for No-license and National Prohibition, believing that such will be in the best interests of the workers." I [from our own correspondent.] ' Archdeafcon Calder has inducted the Rev. Audrey McDonald as vicar of Warkworth parish. j The annual Wesleyan social took place in the Town Hall last evening. An ex-; cellent programme was provided. It was reported that the position of the church is satisfactory in that it is free of debt. The officers have rfow under way the building of a vestry, and schoolroom toward which £90 has been raised, chiefly by the sewing guild. TE AWAMUTU. [FROM OUR, own CORRESPONDENT.] ' A meeting of the Town Board took place on Thursday last, there being present Messrs. Chas. Bowdcn (chairman), A. S. Wallace, S. Matthews, G. H. White and Dr. Reekie. The Prime Minister wrote stating that the matter of a public survey office for Te Awamutu had been very carefully inquired into. There was not sufficient business yet to warrant the appointment ,; of " a permanent draughtsman. The chairman reported having arranged for the work in connection with the expenditure of the Government grant of £200 for street formation. Jas. Blackman, of Masterton communicated with the Board in regard to securing the sole right of lighting the township, with coal gas. It was decided to write for fuller information as to terms, etc. The Commissioner for Crown Lands wrote, stating that the suggestion made in regard to the Land Board holding meetings in Te Awamutu during the coming year would receive consideration when arrangements wero being made for country meetings. Mr. Wylie (auditor-inspector) is now in Te Awamutu. HAMILTON. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Hamilton. Friday. At a meeting of the Borough Council a letter was received from Mr. H. Metcalfe stating that he did not think the. present pumping plant was worth spending any money on, unless absolutely necessary, as a larger plant will be. wanted shortly. In view of this report, it was decided not to go to any expense in procuring duplicate parts for the plant. The treasurer's statement for the period ended November 7 showed receipts £1011 12s 6d, and expenditure £1217 i6s 9d, and for the period since April 1, 8396. 7s and £10.948 lis 7d respectively. The tender of M. C. Faddon and Co. (£904 7s 6d) for drainage works, was accepted. The Railway- Department wrote stating that unless a reduction was made in the charge for gas for Frankton station to 7s 6d per 1000 ft. an acetylene plant would be installed. The matter was referred to the Gas Committee. PUKEKOHE. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Pukekoiie, Friday. A very successful bazaar in connection with the Presbyterian Church has just been held, and resulted in the' substantial sum of £300 being raised by the com-' mittee.
