GROWTH OF KING'S COLLEGE.
MAY BE TAKEN OVER BY CITIZENS. As indicating the growth and importance, of King's College, Remuera, as an educational agency in Auckland, a project is afoot for the taking over of the college by a responsible body of citizens, and a meeting of representative citizens is to be held on Friday evening at the Chamber of Commerce for the purpose of deciding upon the steps to be taken to give effect to the proposal as outlined in tlva following circular, which has been sent to citizens by the King's College Old Boys' Association. The Mayor' of Auckland (Mr. C. J. Parr) will preside at the meeting:-— ; In terms of a resolution carried unanimously at a meeting of the King's College Old Boys' Association, held at the Chamber of Commerce on March 30," the circular states, "we seek your assistance in ". devising a plan whereby advantage may ?be taken of an offer publicly made by Mr. C. T. Major (the principal of King's College) to transfer the goodwill of the school gratuitously to any responsible body of citizens who may : possess the confidence of the public, and may be able to furnish guarantees that the school shall be conducted upen the same lines as- hitherto, and that adequate premises for the purpose shall fo available within, say, four years from this date. " The primary conditions of the transfer are: '"1. That a suitable site, either freehold or leasehold, for such public school, and of at least 20 acres and within a reasonable distance of the city of Auckland, can be obtained for such purpose, and that not les's than £20,000 cash will be forthcoming for. buildings . thereon, and the proper equipment thereof for such a school, and sufficient for at least 150 boarders and 300 day boys, and to be ready and available for such purpose by December 31, 1915,. at the latest. -. ' J' 2. That subject to the payment of interest to the persons subscribing or advancing the £20,000, or any larger sum, at the rate of not exceeding five per cent, per annum cumulative upon the amounts subscribed or advanced, the net earning of the school will bo applied to the school purposes only. "3. That such buildings must include $, duly consecrated chape], and that .religious instruction in conformity with the teaching of the Church of England will form, part of the regular curriculum, subject to a 'conscience clause' for day boys.: "The proposed foundation will in no sense be in competition with, but rather bo complementary to, existing educational facilities; and its influence upon the intellectual, social, and even material welfare of the community should be great." A provisional committee (consisting of Bishop Crossley, Hon. E. Mitchelson, and Messrs. H. W. Hudson, V. J. Lamer J C. Macky, H. B. Morton. J. W. Stewart, and C. J. funks) has, at the request of the Old Boys' Association, gone fully into the matter, and is unanimously of opinion that the proposal deserves the heartiest public support, and cordially endorses the invitation sent to citizens. '
