NEW ZEALAND ARMS.
[from otra own correspondent.] London, September 22. A specially-prepared copy of the 'New Zealand Arms, supplied by the College of Arms, is being forwarded to the Dominion Government by this mail. This.is. a matter in which New Zealanders will be very much interested, for the question of a design has been under debate for a long time past. The King's desire that Dominion banners should be carried in the Coronation procession in the Abbey brought the topic to a. climax, and after a little more pressure the New Zealand authorities approved a design. This was then submitted to the College of Arms and made correct from the heraldic point of view. The Royal Warrant, signed by King George, informing the Earl Marshal that His Majesty had assigned these arms to New Zealand is dated August 26. Under this warrant the Earl Marshal is ordered to have the arms placed upon the records of the College of Arms. The device consists of a shield, supported on either side by a figure. Surmounting the shield is a small lion holding a Union Jack, and at the base is a scroll containing the motto "Onward." The left figure represents a maiden dressed in white clasping the New Zealand ensign, and the right figure is • a Maori chief in native dress holding a spear. The shield itself is divided into five sections. On the rightare ' the golden fleece on a red background and two miner's hammers, on blue, while on the left are the Southern Cross on a blue background, and a sheaf of corn on red. Down the centre section, on a white background, are three ancient galleys in black, taken from the arms of th.3 Duke of Argyll.
