A NEW CARDINAL.
By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. (Received October 30. 12.20 a.m.) Rome, October 29. The Most Rev. Francis Bourne, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster has been created a Cardinal.
Archbishop Bourns is one of the youngest prelates in the ecclesiastical hierarchy of Ilome. He was born in 1861, of Irish parents, and after pursuing his theological studies at the Seminary of St. Sulpice, in Paris, and later at the University of Louvain, was ordained priest in 1884. He discharged the duties of his office at Biackheath, Mortlake, and West Grinstead for a period of five years, when Bishop Butt appointed him rector of the Southwark Diocesan • Seminary at Henfield. Dr. Bourne became Coadjutor Bishop of Southwark in 1896, and succeeded to the absolute control of the diocese in the following year. During Cardinal Vaughan's protracted illness he frequently represented that prelate, especially in connection with questions relating to the Education Acts. Dr. Bourne had a hard struggle in youth. His father worked himself to death, and left his mother practically without means. Nevertheless, even .in those distant days when the fr.dbre archibshop lived obscurely with his aunt, a Miss Byrne, his friends seem to have had some premonition of his' future. A friend calling upon this Miss kJryne one day found her making a magnificent piecc of Irish lace. "That is for my little nephew," she explained, " v.-hen he becomes a bishop."
