NO. 10 LEVEL.

INTERSECTION OF MARTHA REEF.

The following cable was despatched from the local office of the Waihi Gold Mining Company to London on Saturday:—"No. 10 level: Martha reef has been penetrated 20ft, diagonally. , The quartz is soft and friable, brown oxidised. Will cable assay value Monday."

Our own correspondent, in telegraphing from Waihi on Saturday, stated that the appearance of the quartz in the Martha reef intersected at No. 10 level is not promising as far as intersected, and it is not expected that the assays will give good results. " A good deal of the reef, however," lie adds, "has still to be penetrated, and possibly something of better value may be met with later." He adds that the sinking of the shaft to exploit the property at still greater depth has been commenced, and this work will bo pushed on as speedily as possible.

RETURN OF £1193.

The manager of the Monowai mine, Thames, reports that for the month ended October 14, 517 tons of ore were crushed and treated for a return of £1193 15s 10d ; or ail average of £2 6s 2d per ton.

The following are the more important extracts from the general manager's report on operations in the New Zealand Crown Mines, Karangahake, dated September 14, and due to arrive in London to-day — Welcome Reef: At Davies's block in the Waitawt->ta level, the reef measures 21in in thickness, value £1 17s per ton. _ The rise at Murray's block. No. la level, is up 48ft on the reef, which measures 2ft in width and assays at the rats of £2 13s per ton. At Lowe's block, No. 2a level, the reef is 2ft in thickness, value £1 12s per ton. At Digby's block, No. 2b level, the reef is about lft wide, value £2 9s per ton. At Lowe's block, No. 3b level, the reef measures in thickness, value £6 6s per ton. At O'Mara's block the reef is sft wide, valuo £1 Is per ton. At Robinson's block, south of the crosscut, the reef maintains an average width of 4ft for a length of 101 ft along its line, and then a break was met with, cutting" it off completely. It was again met with after crosscutting 16ft to the westward, but has not been sufficiently exploited to determine either its size .or its value. North of the crosscut a rise has been put up 28ft, where it holed through to the winze below the old stopes. Stoping is now in progress north and couth of the rise and the reel, measuring 4ft in thickness, assays at the rate of £3 18s per ton. At Odger's block, No. 4b level, tho intermediate level was driven 40ft along the reef, which measures 4ft wide, value £1 16s per ton. At Ratcliff s block the reef is 2ft in thickness, valuo £4 6s per ton. At Wall's block the reef is wide, value £1 10s per ton. Crown Reef: At McPhert-on's block, Waitawheta level, in the rise at the south end of the block the reef is 2ft wide, value £2 Is per ton. Driving north of the stopes the reef is small and the value of tho ore £1 per ton. The reef in the stopes is 2ft in thickness, value £3 18s per ton. At Hard man s block, No. la level south, the reef is 2£ft wide, value £1 19s per ton. At Cullen'ii block the reef measures 3ft in thickness, value £1 15s per ton. At Morgan's. block, No. 3 level south, the reef is 3ft thick, value £2 10s per ton.

THAMES DEEP LEVELS. t ßy TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Saturday. _ The new contract for driving the third 500 ft on the main crosscut at the 1000 ft level has been let to McKeown and party, the previous contractors, and at the same price per foot as the last 500 ft, viz., 465. A start was made with it on Wednesday last, since when a distance of 18ft has been driven through a good class of working country. The face is now within about 17ft of the boundary of the Waiotahi claim, which point should be reached by about the middle of the W3ek.

SAXON.

[BY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Thames, Saturday. Good progress is being made with the extension of the Saxon subsidiary drive. It has now been driven a total distance of 82fb from ilia main crosscut in a westerly direction along the course of the Savon No. 1 -ef, which is a, body of quartz about 2ft in thickness. This is being broken down as the drive advances, but as yet has not shown any gold. The eastern drive from the main crosscut on the body of quartz intersected near the southern boundary is being continued, and has been driven a distance of 30ft. The reef is about 3ft in thickness, and is composed of favourable-looking quartz carrying a quantity of zinc blende and other good indications, but as yet not showing any gold.

MAY QUEEN. The manager of the May Queen mine, Thames, reports for last week as follows: —No. 10 level, 1000ft:'The crosscut in the direction of the Bright Smile shaft is being extended as usual, and is now about 40ft from the shaft, and it is expected to soon pick up one of the reefs worked by the Bright Smile Company. The drive on the Exchange reef has been stopped, and work is now confined to taking along a leading stope with a view to selecting the most suitable and favourable spot to start rising the stope. This has now been carried about 18ft and the prospects met with are very favourable from the quartz broken down with the shots in stripping the reef. No. '6 level: Crushing dirt, showing gold pretty freely, and at times yielding a little picked stone, continues to come to hand from the branch leaders in the stopes. DREDGING RETURNS. [BY TELEGRAPH. — ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, Saturday The following dredging returns are reported: —Rising Sun, 2602; ldwt; Worksop, 112oz lldwt; Rise and Shine, 320z 14dwt; Blackwater, 41oz.4dwt; Waikaka United No. 1., 220z lOdwt; Waikaka United No. 2, 12oz 15dwt; Sandy Point, 230z ldwt.

Dunedin, Sunday. The following dredging returns are reported: Golden Bed, 31oz 3dwt; No. 909 Dredge, 31oz 2dwt; Manuherika, 31oz; Golden Treasure, 18oz; Olrig, 14oz 16dwt.
