Alfred Emmott (Chairman of the Committee of Ways and Means and DeputySpeaker) and Sir Edward Strachey (who represents the Board of Agriculture in the House of Commons) have been raised to the Peerage. This necessitates by-elections for Oldham (Mr. Emmott's seat) and South Somerset (represented by Sir E Straehey since 1892)..
