Sir, —In reply to "Railway.Man " I may state that there are a largo crowd oi mechanics in the Newmarket Railway Workshops who are competent men, and only receive 10s per day. As regards the six days' pay, tlio men in the : shops work 48 hours, while outside they only work 44 Hours, so if they do earn more per week, the.; earn less per hour. Tradesman. Sir, The correspondent who complains that the pay of carpenters in the Government workshops at Newmarket is only 10s per day is well-informed. The individual trying to correct him is otherwise. The pay is reckoned for six days of. eight hours, which is at the rate of 8| hours for five days and Mc hours for Saturday*, The outside carpenter gets £3 6s for a week of 44 hours, those working for a paternal Government a model employer indeed £3 for. a week of 48 hours. I trust this explanation will enlighten "Railway Mail," and encourage him to ascertain the facts of the case in future before laying down the. law. : ; One of the Men. ..
