Waih:, Sunday. The annual meeting of members of the Waihi Federal Brass Band was held last evening in the band hall, Mr. H. McCarthy presiding. The report made reference to the bands success at the Palmerston contest, and gave praise to the bandmaster, Mr. Russell, for the manner in which the boys' band had progressed under his care. The balance-sheet showed the receipts to bo £615 8s lid, and the expenditure £608 4s 4d, leaving a credit of £7 4s 7d. Tho assets were set down at £545, while the liabilities amounted to only £29 8s 9d. The resignation of Mr. J. Newdick, the treasurer, was received with regret, and the retiring officer was made an honorary life member. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as under -—Patron, Mr. H. HUNTLY. j [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Hcktlt, Saturday. During tho absence of Mr. E. D. Thomson, postmaster, on holiday leave, Mr. Martin, relieving officer, is acting as locum tenens. , Mr. F. Twiname, registrar of electors tor Raglan, expects to havo the new roll ready for the printers early in the week. Mondav will he a close holiday in Huntlv, the nines and business places being closed in celebration of Labour Day. The ceremonies in connection with the driving of the first pile of tho new bridge will keep the great majority of the residents at home. ' Orders for coal being numerous, the mines, except on Saturday, worked well last week. . , An enjoyable social, organised by a committee'of ladies interested in Oddfellowship, was held in tho Masonic Hall. The prizes in the progressive euchre tournament were won by Mrs. A. Christiansen and Mr. J. Dooley. For the done ing, excellent music was provided by Mr. T. S. Webster. During the evening Bro. I. Spence was presented with a handsomelyframed past grand's diploma. The weather during the past week has been cold, bleak, and wet, while thunder, accompanied by hail, has not boen absent. The rain was much wanted, and will do a great deal of good. ' i On Thursday Mr. G. V. \\estbrook, apiary inspector, paid an official visit to Huntty. ~ ~ At present considerable activity prevails in the railway yard, where three 1000 candle-power Lux lights have been erected, and preparations are being made for the installation of several large water tanks of sufficient capacity to supply the Main Trunk express with the necessary water. Huntly, it is stated and hoped, is about to become a stopping-place for the train.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Mrs Ward, sen., of Ness Valley, while walking in the road and shielding her face with her umbrella, on Thursday last, slipped into a deep rut and broke her °The Rev. Smellie's health is still far from satisfactory. Both he and Mrs. Smellie are at present at Rotorua, and Mr Fell is undertaking his duties. The rain has done a gre*l deal of good, especially to the crops. . HAMILTON. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] Hamilton, Sunday. At the dose of the second course of agricultural instruction conducted by Mr. Kalangher, of the Board of Education, which has been held in the High School, Hamilton, tho students presented the instructor with a handsome rose bowl suitably inscribed. , Last night the Shakespere Club read Bernard Shaw's comedy. "You Never Can Tell," to a good attendance, the reading being the best of the series, which will be closed on Saturday next. The following officers will present themselves for examination on November 17 and 18 as second lietenants :—G. L. Ewen, K. C. Galbraith, E. H. Northcroft, G Battery Field Artillery; K. D. Gilmer, J. W. Hopkins, J. H. Luxford, A. E. McDonald, G. Watt, and L. H. GiUet, 16th Waikato Infantry. On the 21st and following days the following officers will be examined :-- Captains J. J. Raynes (4th Waikato Mounted Rifles), G. J. Rastrick and R. C. Allen (loth Waikato Infantry), examination "D." Lieutenants W. Jeffries (16th Waikato Infantry), A. C. Bluck, D. Bruce, C. H.
