THE MAINE PUZZLE.
IS PROHIBITION REPEALED ? By Telegr»ph.—Pre«« Awoclttlon.— Sydney, October 12. Ik regard to the recent vote on the question of prohibition in Maine Canon Boyce contends that prohibition is still in force in that State. The recent vote, he says, was only on the question of altering the Constitution so that the State Legislature might have the power to repeal the prohibitory law if -it desired to do so. Canon Boyce thinks it improbable that Parliament will view the poll as a mandate to introduce local option. The voting was so close that a second count will most likely be required. THE POSITION IN DOUBT. WHAT WAS THE RESULT? ■ ■••■ -:■ ':■■■■■■■-'. \. '■■ [Bt TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Thursday. From further information received by the Rev. J. Dawson, of the New Zealand Alliance, it appears that the issue voted on in Maine was : " Shall the prohibitory amendment to the State Constitution be repealed?" They voted, "Yes >\ orNo." Mr. Dawson has received a further cable from the Rev. F. J. Berry (superintendent of the Civic League and editor of the Civic Record) as- follows :—"Corrections completed October 9. ' No' majority 748. Total vote about 121,000." This refers to the recount of the original vote on September 11, about which conflicting versions have been received. .
