FRENCH NAVAL DISASTERS.
ANOTHER FIRE AT TOULON. By Telegraph.- Association.—Copyright. V Paris, October 9. A fire occurred to-day aboard the French cruiser Waldeck Rousseau, at Toulon. • , ".. : , : .... \ ~ The fire was extinguished by the flooding of the bunkers.
-The outbreak of fire on the WaldeckRosseau, one of the newest and finest vessels in the French navy, will probably be regarded as lending colour ; to. the theory that something more than accidental causes have lately been at work in connection with France's fleet. This fire is the fourth that has taken place within the past month. The first was aboard the ; Gloire at Toulon, ; when several men were killed by the back-flash from one cartridge igniting another. This was followed by the sensational destruction of the Liberte, and a day later an outbreak was discovered 1 aboard; her sister ship, the Patrie, but was extinguished before any damage had been caused. Deflagration of the powder was declared to be >the. cause of the disasters to the Gloire and Liberte, but the sequence, combined with attempts to enter the magazine at Toulon, led a section of the French press to ascribe the trouble to foreign interference. An explosion of an internal machine at Toulon is also reported in today's cablegrams. ■ -■■
