THE NAVAL BASE.
PICTON HARBOUR UNSUITABLE. [»T TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] . r Wellington, Monday. Thb Admiralty has decided that Picton Harbour is unsuitable for the purpose of a naval base. Representations were made to the Admiralty in May by the Picton Borough Council, and the reply which has now been received by the Council states that "careful consideration has been given to the representations contained in the memo, of the Picton Borough Council, and while it is recognised that Picton Harbour has great natural advantages, it is considered that the absence of docks and facilities for repairing ships, and the lack of railway communication with the main system of the South Island, render it unsuitable for adoption as a naval base." " "'■:'■■':: : '
Auckland has already been selected as a base for the navy in Australasian waters, a fact that was announced by the Prime Minister on his return from the last Defence Conference!'' Sir Joseph Ward has no reason to suppose that the authorities propose to alter their decision in this respect. : A suggestion has been made that the selection was subject to approval by a commission of inquiry, but the Prime Minister states t%at there is ho need for ratification in this way. * *■
