POLICE COURT NEWS.

SATURDAY NIGHT ROW. At the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., Albert Schierning was charged with assaulting Edward i Ellis. The story of the police was that ' on Saturday night Schierning struck Ellis i on the head with his fist, and Ellis fell, striking his head against the kerbstone, a severe wound resulting. Tho accused admitted the charge, and was fined 10s, and costs 19s. DRUNKENNESS. On charges of drunkenness Arthur John Harries and Albert Beckett were each fined 10a or 48 hours, Thomas Whitford and William Henry Grant were each' fined 5s or 24 hours, three first offenders were each fined 5s or 24 hours, and another "first offender forfeited £1 bail. For being drunk and procuring liquor while prohibited, Frank Jamieson was fined £1 or three days. MISCELLANEOUS. Richard Williams, charged with deserting from the steamer Beckenham, was remanded to appear at Timaru. Frank Clarke was fined £1 for committing an indecent act. Two brothers, William John Clark and Thomas Cairns Clark, were charged with using threatening behaviour in East-street on Saturday. Both young men bore evidences of tho fight. They pleaded guilty and were fined 10s and costs 7s each. ALLEGED ASSAULT. The adjourned case in which Theophilus Wake was summoned for assaulting J L. Benwell and Mrs. Benwell at Devonport on August 23, came up for hearing at the Ponce Court yesterday before Messrs. R. T. Michaels and W. Hall, J.P's. Hugh Wake was also summoned for disturbing Benwell's picture entertainment at Devonport, and further with assaulting Mrs. Benwell. There were cross-summonses against Benwells, the charge against J. L. Benwell being that he assaulted Hugh Wake, and against Mrs. Benwell that she assaulted Theophilus Wake. Mr. Hackett represented the Benwells, and Mr. Richmond the Wakes. The case was part heard on Thursday, and Mr. Richmond, in outlining the defence to-day, raised a question of property rights. After considerable discussion the justices decided that they would prefer tho matter to go before a magistrate, and the cases were adjourned, the solicitors agreeing to this course being taken. The charges against Hugh Wake were dismissed.
