BRICK WALLS COLLAPSE.
A STARTLING ACCIDENT,
[BY TELEGRAPH.-— ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, Monday. A startling accident occurred at the Corporation gasworks this afternoon. Four men were working on the top of a 10ft brick wall, which was being erected in connection with extensions to the new retort house. They were engaged in striking the centre of an arch joining two of a scries of seven brick walls. Their operations evidently disturbed the brickwork, and the arch crumbled and the whole wall collapsed. The falling debris struck the adjoining wall, and in this manner five walls, 20ft high and 20ft long, were demolished one after the other.
One of the four men saw the danger and stepped on to the outside wall, which remained standing, and the other three were precipitated to the ground. One, John Dryden, was evidently struck on the head -with a brick, and was removed to the hospital. His condition is grave. The other two men escaped with minor injuries., '
