"BE HONEST AND UPRIGHT."
ALLEGED FORGER'S MOTTO. Fob some time forged cheques in Kuri Kuri (N.S W.) have "been occasionally worked off, and th© police made- great efforts to locate the culprit. The custom was to "wait till the rush on a pay day. Thus four cheques were cashed. The teller in the City Bank was also victimised, and perplexity reigned. The teller then adopted a ruse. He secured the numbers of all cheques drawn by the person whose signature had been forged, and by a careful watch he discovered a number on record which corresponded with a number on a cheque presented by a youth in the employ of a local tradesman.
Tho signature was perfect, but the number betrayed the alleged forgery. The police were informed, and visited the youth's lodgings. His room walls wero ornamented with many texts. , One said, "Be honest and upright." Another, "Be true to thyself, and then thou cannot be false to any man." Certain evidence was also found in, a box. The,accused was brought before the Court and remanded. Bail was refused.
