HUMOUR OF MR, HOGG.
"ALMOST TURNED TO BACON."' [BY telegraph.—special correspondent.] v . Wellington, Friday. * The contribution made to the debate on }; • the , Address-in-Reply by Mr. Hogg this k ; afternoon fully maintained the reputation which he has gained by his previous efforts : to brighten the pages of Hansard. This rit afternoon he delighted the House with " a , wierd and uncanny story of the Rimutaka . incline." "The Rimutaka incline," he . said, " is a place of long tunnels, where the long-woolled sheep of my friend, Mr. Buchanan (member for Wairarapa), , are turned into black-faced ewes and lambs (laughter)—not long ago Lord Islington , was almost turned into a prince of darkness on an occasion when his train was stuck in a tunnel. I have been almost turned into bacon while travelling through , the tunnels on the incline." . (Laughter.) i ' While the House was in a good humour, ;'; . Mr. v Hogg made a strong appeal for the / deviation of the line. * The Speech from the Throne also furnished , material for Mr. Hogg's. humour. He described the speech as being "as bare • v; as a glass window, and as bald as a billiard r ball. It had given members nothing to get hold of, and the efforts of members had 1 - resembled an attempt by a deaf and dumb / . man to sing the Doxology. The House f had been treated to a bald-headed epitome of stale news."
