MEETINGS.

THE GEOLOGY OF .AUCKLAND.

AN illustrated geological lecture on "Auckland Harbour and : Its Surroundings" was repeated by Mr. E. K. Mulgan, chief inspector of schools, before a large gathering ,of teachers, hold, at ' the Training College last evening, under the auspices of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Educational institute. Mr. K. Lying on the slate were.the sandstones and shales known as tho Waiteinata beds. Scattered through in places were various old volcanic deposits, and on top of these rested the more recent, geologically speaking, volcanic outpourings with which all Aucklanders were familiar. The means by which, the Waitemata was converted from an ancient river valley into the present harbour by subsidence was also explained. The causes of volcanic and geyser action were also dealt witn and illustrated bv some excellent lantern slides, which included views of Eangitoto, the deposits from the Tarawera eruption, views of Lyttelton Harbour, and other interesting evidences' of volcanic activity. The pictures of Jtangitoto, which illustrated the different stages of lava deposits, were specially interesting. Some pictures of the beautiful scenery on the west coast of Auckland, than which, the leoturcr said, there was nothing finer in New Zealand, were also shown. The lecture wwje altogether a most instructive and interesting one, and was followed . with keen inte.fcst. s ' .
