RAILWAY GOODS YARDS.
NEW SHED TO BE ERECTED. ' GREATER LENGTH OF SIDINGS. * Local'merchants wil learn with satisfaction that the congestion which has existed at the Auckland railway goods yard hitherto will be relieved to some extent at .an early date, by the erection of a new - goods shed and the addition of another mile, and a-half of sidings. The improvements, which were sanctioned by Cabinet , last week, will involve a total expenditure ■' of-£BOOO. ■ . The new shed, which will have a length of "350 ft by 40ft wide, will- be erected at • the Parnell end of the yard, being given v a approach from the road leading from r the' Strand to the foreshore at Mechanics', i Bay. The shed will be built in galvanised iron, and will be devoted entirely to the reception of inward goods. By this means ! 'the present inward goods shed, 280 ft by 42ft, will bo made available for the handling of. outward goods, and, with the present outward goods shed, will be used solely , J for that purpose. ' ■ ' • Simultaneously with the carrying out of i this work an additional mile * and a-balf ' of sidings will be laid down, increasing the total length of sidings in the Auckland yard to nine and a-half* miles. The newsidings will be used solely for goods traffic. - The' Department proposes to get the I? extra room necessary for the extensions by :■ removing the ironbark depot, which occupies a good deal of space, from the Auckland yard to Penrose. ' . The work will be put in hand at once, J;and will probably be completed in about 'six months' time.
