WESLEY ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY
The first concert of the season "of the Wesley Orchestral Society was held on' Friday evening last, in the Pitt-street' Methodist School Hall, before a large \ and- : ; enthusiastic audience. The orchestral items showed that careful study had s been - ! •given ; to the music. Leutner's famous "Festival" overture opened the programme. The orchestra's other numbers were American fantasia "In Coonland" ( Bigood), the '"■:■- " Tannhauser" overture (Wagner), and a selection from " Aladdin., Mr. ,T. W. Brough was recalled for his spirited singing of ■*.*. The Veteran's Song'' (Adams). Miss Florence Cadman played with taste and expression, " Romance du 2nd Concerto," for violin, by : Wieniawski, and as ah encore gave Lem'are's evergreen' "Andantino in ; D." Gounod's "Serenade," and "Slumber Song" was sung by Miss Bertha Parker, who was enthusiastically received. : Mr. Wilfred Moffart, a gold medallist from the Lancashire contest, was heard in Auckland for the first time. His items -were "Karl, the Martyr," and "Mr. Montpillier's '<• Recital" (Turner). Mr. Arthur Ripley delighted the audience with his artistic rendering of "Once Again," and. had >to respond to an encore. Mr. T. T. Garland wielded the baton. Mr. James McElwain acted as leader of the orchestra, and Miss. Hilda Garland as pianiste. The accompaniments were played r>y Miss Elsie Probert, Miss E. M. Rhodes, and Mr. Armiger.
