BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS.

ELIMINATION BOUTS.

The amateur provincial championship teste held by the Northern Boxing Association commenced in His Majesty's Theatre last night before a large crowd of spectators. A novelty about tho proceedings was a new system of judging, in which tho two judges and the referee for each match were drawn for before the match on the stage. Those acting in these capacities were Major Pluggo and Messrs. Burke, Burns, Hamilton Brown, and Dyer. The matches fought last night were practically elimination tests for this evening's work, and had no feature of remarkable interest. Some of the bouts were very lively and interesting, and there were no slack rounds at all. The principal interest centred in the matches for the heavier men, but those in which the best men were engaged were comparatively onesided, and the meet strenuous boxing of the evening was between the light-weights Burns and Ross. The presence of Pooley, tho Australasian champion, led to the anticipation of a solid fight in his section. But though Dwyer managed to get through Pooley's defence at odd times, and occasionally landed a blow, the end was obvious nearly all the time, and the finishing touches were superfluous as an indication as to which man had won. Major Plugge acted as M.C. .The following were the matches: — Bantam-weights. R. Conway (7st 101b) beat F. Lester (Bst 21b). This was a characteristic, lively little fellows' match, with little to note, except Conway's sudden realisation in the third round that he had a right hand, and that Lester had no defence on that side. Both boys were badly done up, and no decision being made, a fourth round was fought, the points going to Conway. G. Brown (7st 41b) beat L. Rathbone (Bst 21b). Although nearly a stone heavier, and about a foot taller than Brown, Rathbono was no, match" in strength or skill for his oponent, and Brown had an easy win on points. Feather-weights. G. Sparrow (Bst lO&lb) beat A. Wright (Bst 12£lb). The first round was unsensational, but early in the second Wright received a heavy blow on the neck, which shook his defence, and he was counted out soon after. A. Leslie (Bst 121b) beat R. Webb (Bst 12£lb). Webb had the worst of all three rounds, but in spite of heavy punishment in the second and third rounds, stayed out the time. The margin of points went to Leslie. E. W. Chapman (Bst ll£lb) beat A. Stack (Bst 13£lb). This was a very fast performance, both men being extremely willing. The pace told heavily on Stack in the second round, and receiving several nasty knocks, ho went down, and took a rest of nine seconds. He had no further opportunity, and having gone down again twice in quick succession, "threw it up." F. Craig (Bst 131b) beat G. Whalley (Bst llglb). The first round opened inauspiciously with a wrestling hold, in which Craig was thrown. In the first round Whalley had an advantage, but' in the second and third Craig's long reach told, and he won easily on points. Light-weights. J. Burns (9st 121b) beat L. Ross (9st 111b). This proved a most exciting fight. Ross put in some very pretty boxing, and punished bis opponent very heavily, but he took the hammering wonderfully well. There was only one prospect until, in the middle of the second round, Burns landed a very heavy blow in the face, and Ross sat down for as long as he could. That proved the turning point of tho match, and Ross was heavily punished for/ the rest of the round, going down twice Ipefore the gong sounded. In the third round ho was sent down again twice, and, being completely done, gave up. R. Craig (9st 131b) beat B. England (9st 21b). This match was one-sided, and was all over in the first round, England being knocked through the ropes, and .out. F. Warren (9st 9ilb) beat R. Kneebone (9st 12ilb). Warren's long reach enabled him to land many blows without difficulty, but they lacked weight. In the second round ho landed ono of the few heavy blows of tho match, and his opponent took the count. Welter-weights. J. Connelly (lOst 71b) beat F. Mendoza (10st s£lb). Mendoza had some advantage in reach, but Connelly's groat quickness and ring experience outmatched him, and the match was one-sided. In the second round Connelly landed a number of blows, and without any definite knock-out, Mendoza collapsed very completely, and took the count. G. Olsen had a bye. Middle-weights. E. Patrick (list 041b) beat A. Miller (lOst 111b). Both men were Maoris. The fight had its comic side _ very • strongly developed, neither man being very scientific, ' and after four rounds of furious fighting, Patrick was given the win, though Miller certainly knew a good deal more about the game than his opponent. H. Spear (list 3ilb) beat W. Douglas (lOst 12£lb). Very willing fighting was seen between this pair, the first round ending with a fair score of blows, and both men on the ropes. In the second round Spear landed heavily on the face, and Doughs went down. He struggled lip at nine, but was put out at once. F. Holt had a bye. Heavy-weights. A Pooley (12st) beat M. Dwyer (13st 71b). This was a disappointing bout, doing littlo more than to afford Pooley a chance to display his boxing, skill and his tremendous punching power. 'Dwyer hardly reached him at all, and seemed disinclined to risk attempts to do so, though clearly a powerful hitter. Consequently he got very badly punished, with some extra for his pluck in standing up to it, and after some tremendous hammering, was counted out in the second round. P. Barclay had a bye.
