A THRILLING ESCAPE.
ENGINEDRIVER'S PROMPT ACT.
Prompt action on the part of an enginedriver averted a serious accident last week at a crossing at _ East Maitland (N.S.W.), when 10 children returning home from school narrowly escaped being run down by a passenger train.
The children were waiting for a coal train to pass, so that they might cross over, and were standing 011 the line when the 4.20 train from Newcastle swung round the bend. Owing to the noise made by tho coal train the oncoming passenger train was not noticed by them ; but the driver, Farnham, seeing the danger, sounded his whistle and jammed on the Westinghouso brake. He succeeded in bringing the train to a standstill within a few yards of tho children, who were paralysed with fear, and had remained standing 011 the line.
Tho sudden stoppage of the train unseated a number of passengers, many of whom received a shaking.
